To promote, preserve, and nurture the ancient Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam while inspiring and engaging the youth with its depth and relevance. To bring transition in our traditions without disturbing the core elements of each discipline by fusing Bharatanatyam, Contemporary, Kathak & Ballet dance styles. To train students not only in Indian classical dance traditions but also in modern dance styles, shaping versatile, skilled, and socially aware dance professionals. To contribute meaningfully to the growth and strengthening of Lucknow’s art and cultural landscape through high-quality training, cultural events, and festivals, and to take dance to spaces and communities where access to the arts is limited.

About Nirguna Dance Company

Nestled in the heart of Lucknow, Nirguna Dance Company (NDC) is a 1, 500 sq. ft. creative studio for dancers, artists, musicians, and art lovers. Founded by sisters Shachi Biswas and Chinmoyee Biswas, NDC was born from a shared vision to create a safe and nurturing space for passionate dancers. The centre offers training in the ancient Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam, alongside modern dance styles such as Contemporary and Ballet.

Shachi Biswas

Founder/Director Nirguna Dance Company

Shachi Biswas is a Lucknow-born dancer and movement practitioner with over sixteen years of experience in Bharatanatyam and Contemporary dance. Driven by the philosophy that dance and dreams are synonymous, she focuses on the interplay between stillness and movement while exploring the amalgamation of various styles without compromising their core elements. In 2015, she founded the Nirguna Foundation, an academy named after Lord Shiva meaning “the one without attributes.” Through this platform, Shachi aims to make dance accessible to a global audience and utilizes movement as a powerful medium for storytelling.

Chinmoyee Biswas

Co-Founder Nirguna Dance Company

Chinmoyee Biswas is a Lucknow-based Bharatanatyam and Contemporary dancer with over 16 years of experience. A Goldsmiths, University of London alumna with an MA in Arts Administration, & Culture Policy she holds a Prabhakar degree and completed her Arangetram in 2015. Chinmoyee has collaborated with global icons like Seeta Patel and Mayuri Upadhya, and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. As Artistic Director of Nirguna Dance Company, she mentors students worldwide, from India to Europe. Combining classical rigor with modern innovation, she remains dedicated to preserving Indian heritage while performing at premier festivals and evolving the art form for contemporary global audiences.

I had a wonderful experience during these two months. I learned a lot about my body and breath work which I never focused on. Each inhale and exhale became a tool to lengthen and strengthen my posture, allowing for more graceful and controlled motions. I like Shachi's style of training. She understands each individual and has a wide knowledge. Her approach is holistic and what sets her apart is her ability to inspire and push every individual beyond their limits.

I have been learning Contemporary & Bharatanatyam since April 2024. My experience has been wonderful, and I've seen significant improvement in my dance skills. The classes are well-structured. Shachi is an excellent teacher. She provides personalised attention and feedback. Her guidance and support have helped me grow not only as a dancer but also as a person. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn from her and look forward to continuing my dance journey with her.

Here, I first started taking online classes. But there is a lot of difference in offline & online classes. The way they teach dance is good. I feel safe and happy there. Deeply grateful for their time and effort.

It has been a wonderful experience. Learnt so much from Chinmoyee and now from Shachi Didi. From Chinmoyee we learnt the basics like how to use a knife and from Shachi Didi we are learning how to sharpen our knife in terms of expressions and emotions. It is a dream come true experience and I'm looking forward to learning more styles from the institute.
